The essay grants the machines, splits the word “best,” finds one door it cannot open, and then wagers on what attention does afterward.
It opens on a specific sentence and refuses to audit the weakest version of it: the 2025 post named no payer and no date, the later record names both, and the essay treats the improved forecast as the one worth testing. Then it grants the machines completely. The one thing it will not grant is that a machine decides who gets what it makes.
The first leg is physical. A per-person energy benchmark, a waste-heat ceiling far above it, and a materials check establish that nothing in thermodynamics forbids the scale being claimed — while stating plainly that a benchmark is not a bill and does not price the transition. The second leg is structural. “Best” carries a bar reading and a rank reading, and each good stacks three layers: knowing-how that copies, stuff the grant covers, and a residue that can only be occupied. That sort produces the verdict — mostly yes — and the essay labels it a judgment rather than a measurement.
The third leg is political: distribution is chosen, the one planetary precedent was decided by a handful of people on a two-vote margin and delivered a good once, and no precedent was found for a recurring flow. The close is a wager, not a finding: as delivered goods become routine, attention is expected to re-anchor to the differences the machines never touch. Two ledgers keep that from collapsing into ingratitude or into complacency.

How it connectsThis is the hinge. A bar is a fixed standard anyone can cross without taking anything from anyone else. A rank has exactly one holder, so “everyone has the number one home” fails the way “everyone is above average” fails.
What challenged itAn earlier draft defined the bar twice and incompatibly, three sentences apart — once as adequacy, once as the frontier of what is known.

How it connectsMaking and getting are different facts. Planet-scale delivery has succeeded once, and the decision behind it was tiny: a single delegation’s initiative, a budget vote carried by two votes above the threshold, and a seven-person establishment at that moment.
What challenged itReview pressed on whether the essay was smuggling in an entitlement claim.
What happenedThe text states that nobody is owed anything; the condition is that someone with the capacity would have to decide, and successors would have to keep deciding.
What’s still at riskThe vote arithmetic rests on a single source, and apparently independent corroborations trace back to the same book. The precedent also covers a good delivered once, not a recurring flow.
