Issue 31 · Audit redline

The redline

Freeze versus landing: there is no wording diff. Ruling A landed the freeze as written. This page exists so that absence is a published fact, not a missing leaf.

Canonicality: the essay Signal & Noise stands behind is the published Issue 31, George Saunders Is Right About Writing. He May Be Wrong About the Rest of Us.. This redline is part of its published audit. Base: freeze issue-031-author-FROZEN-v1.0. Landing: that same freeze. Ruling A (2026-10-04, about 9:52 AM PT): landing copy equals freeze copy. Zero freeze-to-landing wording changes. No silent improvements.

R0 · No floor rows ruling A

Recorded 2026-10-04. Floor fails: 0. There is nothing to strike and nothing to insert. Human redline: none.

The author freeze is the author landing. The interview quotations and the named studies matched their sources, with the quote and claim notes recorded on the parent audit. Opinion-scope sentences remain as written. They were not rewritten to look safer.

Not a redline row: quote and claim notes. “Super-permeated” attaches to sensibility in the freeze and to taste in the interview. The Bartleby line drops the interview’s brackets. “Thousands of micro-choices” is not the interview’s full span. “About a quarter” matches NAEP Writing 2011, and the year is not in the essay. “Spending less cognitive effort” matches the Lee et al. headline and flattens a conditional result. Ruling A keeps the freeze as written. The notes live on the parent audit. The machine companion’s two quote notes live on its audit.

Not in this redline: Stage C reader objections. Those LAND as audit-only on the parent audit under the Issues 23/25 lossy-compression precedent. The title promises more disagreement than the close delivers. That is not a strikethrough on a freeze that ruling A left in place. The machine essay’s reader objections are on its own audit, for the same reason.
