Published audit
The essay is the judgment. This page is the inspection surface.
Canonicality: The essay Signal & Noise stands behind is Issue 28, Equal Intelligence Does Not Mean Adequate Security, published at Signal & Noise. This page is its published audit, not a second edition of the essay. The machine companion lives beside this record; it is not a correction of the author’s essay, and it is not a second front door.
Record: the freeze held as issue-028-author-FROZEN-v1.0. Ruling A: land both freezes as-is. Zero freeze-to-landing wording changes. Landing copy is freeze copy. There is no silent improvement and no freeze-to-landing redline of wording. LANDS as audit-only means a Stage C argument-scope objection stands and is published here; it does not edit the essay. That is the Issues 23/25 lossy-compression precedent. DID NOT LAND means the objection is recorded and rejected as a reason to change or block the text.
The redline
Freeze versus landing: none. Ruling A kept the freeze as the landing. Stage C argument objections live on this audit, not as strikethrough on the essay.
The machine’s version
A machine companion, not a correction of the author’s essay. One hundred percent machine-generated via OpenRouter and locked before the author upload. Signal & Noise stands behind the author’s essay above. Do not merge the two landings.
The conversation behind this
The author–AI exchange that produced the author freeze: one public ChatGPT share, then an off-chat machine companion written without seeing that draft. X/profile/pin, curator (Don), and subscriber email are outside this record. Audio companions live on the published essay page, not in this transcript.
Source checked
This dual-audit was a source check against the named literature and a floor pass. It was not a three-company document audit.
- Mark Zuckerberg, Open Source AI Is the Path Forward, Meta, 23 July 2024
- Qi et al., Fine-tuning Aligned Language Models Compromises Safety, Even When Users Do Not Intend To!, arXiv:2310.03693 (2023)
- International AI Safety Report 2026, Executive Summary
Objections raised, and what happened to each
Floor objections against the author freeze: none that failed. Stage C ran two legs — moonshotai/kimi-k3 and anthropic/claude-opus-4.1 (stealth/ox-alpha was unavailable). The legs converged on three argument-scope objections. Those publish here under ruling A; they do not rewrite the landing. Dispositions summarize the objections; they do not invent Stage C quotations.
- Weaker “equal intelligence” slogan versus the cited case. The essay hits a weaker equal-intelligence claim. The Zuckerberg-style case also claims institutional resource advantages the essay partly concedes. LANDS as audit-only. Argument-scope.
- Foreign-release concession versus the release test. The concession that foreign release can already put weights in circulation is not integrated into the release test, or into the marginal harm of another domestic release. LANDS as audit-only. Scope.
- Weighing standard missing. The claim that defensive benefits outweigh additional harm, and the staged-access recommendation, lack an assessable weighing standard. LANDS as audit-only. Argument-scope.
The dual gap, stated so the two landings are not merged: the author essay argues from structural attacker–defender asymmetries and cited literature. The machine companion argues that recognition is not jurisdiction, and that stop-power is not established by equal download. Those are different theses.
Floor and what matched
Floor fails on the author essay: 0. Named facts matched the fetched sources. Zuckerberg 2024: as long as everyone has access to similar generations of models — which open source promotes — then governments and institutions with more compute resources will be able to check bad actors with less compute; also pre-release testing, mitigation, and red-teaming. Qi et al. 2023: fine-tuning can compromise safety alignment even without malicious intent. International AI Safety Report 2026 executive summary: whether attackers or defenders will benefit more from AI assistance remains uncertain; open-weight models cannot be recalled once released; safeguards are easier to remove.
There is no accepted floor row and therefore no wording on the human redline. The landing is the freeze. This page is where Stage C argument objections are visible, so the author does not get credit for silent improvements and the audit does not pretend those objections were never raised.
What ran
Author-essay drafting: ChatGPT-6/Astra, author-steered, in the public share on the development record. Machine companion: openai/gpt-6-astra-pro via OpenRouter at reasoning effort xhigh, seeded with the question only, locked before the author upload. It did not see the author draft. Floor dual-audit: 2026-09-13, 0 fails on both sides. Stage C critique legs the same day: moonshotai/kimi-k3 and anthropic/claude-opus-4.1, four of four (both essays). Ox Alpha was unavailable.
What this audit did: check the author essay against Zuckerberg 2024, Qi et al. 2023, and the International AI Safety Report 2026 executive summary, record 0 floor fails, and publish Stage C argument objections with dispositions. What it did not do: change freeze wording, treat the machine companion as a second edition, or merge the two landings. The essay Signal & Noise stands behind is the author landing — freeze issue-028-author-FROZEN-v1.0.
