AI Won't End Scarcity. It Will Move It.

The machines may make elite-quality goods ordinary. They cannot make rank universal.

Elon Musk says AI and robotics will create "amazing abundance," with the best medical care, food, home, and transport available to everyone. When someone objected that some things remain scarce no matter how much an economy can produce, Musk offered a perfect example: AI and robotics will mean everyone can have a penthouse.

He may be right about the apartment. The word "penthouse" gives away the problem.

Machines might make the space, finish, comfort, and service associated with a penthouse cheap enough for anyone. They cannot give everyone the top floor. Once the bundle becomes universal, it stops signaling position and becomes a building standard. Status does not disappear. It moves.

Here is my bet: AI can universalize a standard of living. It cannot universalize standing. And as today's luxuries become tomorrow's infrastructure, we will benefit enormously, then direct more of our attention toward the things the machines cannot copy — the best address, the scarce seat, the particular person's time, the right to decide, the experience of being chosen.

Abundance may arrive. Scarcity will change its address.

To isolate that claim, assume the models become capable enough. Assume the robots can manufacture at staggering scale. Assume the energy and materials arrive. Assume, even, that owners and governments make the output universally accessible. Abundance without access is merely inventory, but distribution is another argument. Even after that door opens, rank survives.

Medical care shows why. A diagnosis, a surgical technique, and a treatment protocol are forms of know-how. Once encoded in a capable system, they can be copied. A specialist trains for years and eventually retires; software can be reproduced. Pair it with enough machines and clinics, and something close to universally excellent care becomes imaginable.

But not every part of care copies. A transplant organ does not. Neither does an hour with one particular trusted human, or the first place in line for a treatment that has just been invented. AI can lift the standard of care while leaving a frontier where access is still ranked.

Housing makes the distinction impossible to hide. Design can be copied. Construction can be automated. Spacious, beautiful, climate-controlled homes can be built in huge numbers. Location cannot. The most desirable address still has one occupant. "Everyone has the No. 1 home" is not a difficult engineering problem. It is the same category error as "everyone is above average."

We can see this logic in institutions as well as land. Between Harvard's classes of 2021 and 2026, applications rose by about 55 percent while offers of admission barely moved. That does not prove progress makes people more status-obsessed. It shows something simpler: more demand does not manufacture more of a seat whose value depends partly on selectivity. The bottleneck is not educational content. It is the position the institution confers.

Then there is the quieter force working on everything that does scale: normalization. Antibiotics, refrigerated food, instant maps, and a library in a pocket would have looked like sorcery to earlier generations. They remain extraordinarily valuable. We simply do not wake up astonished by them. Within a life, the miracle fades to furniture. Across generations, children never experience the arrival at all.

That is not ingratitude. Attention is drawn to contrast and change. Once a new floor becomes normal, the remaining gaps stand out more sharply. The better AI becomes at making one category of good abundant, the more cultural energy may collect around the categories that resist it.

To be sure, none of this means abundance is fake, or that material improvement does not improve lives. Clean water is easy to ignore and catastrophic to lose. Universal expert care would be a civilizational victory even if our grandchildren treated it as ordinary. A miracle does not stop being a miracle because the children born after it call it normal.

Nor do I know that every ounce of attention freed from material anxiety will go to status. Some may go to family, craft, friendship, exploration, or play. I hope it does. And not every scarce good is frivolous: a transplant organ, a safe location, or a trusted person's time carries real value. Sometimes attention to what remains scarce is not vanity. It is accurate bookkeeping.

But those concessions narrow the claim; they do not erase it. A society can become dramatically richer while its loudest conflicts become more positional. A higher floor and a fiercer contest over standing are not opposites. They can be the same future.

That changes what we should demand from the AI age. More output is necessary. Wider access is necessary. Neither is a complete social vision. We will also have to decide how much of life to organize as a tournament, which scarce doors deserve to remain scarce, and how to protect dignity from rank even when rank itself cannot be abolished.

If the machines deliver universal expert care and our grandchildren treat it like plumbing, that is success. The achievement becoming invisible is not the failure. The failure would be to look at the new competition for the top and conclude that nothing arrived.

AI can raise every floor, but it cannot put everyone on top; the work left to us is untangling human dignity from the penthouse view.
